Slide in Dubai Unemployment Rate

According to labor data released by Dubai Statistics Centre, joblessness in Dubai has declined by almost 20 percent. It stood at barely one percent in 2009 which means more than 11,000 professionals were unemployed out of an active population of nearly 1.6 million.

The data showed that population of unemployed expatriates was just a little less than the double of that of Emirate natives. To be precise, 7,200 expatriates and 4,000 natives were left without jobs last year in 2009 mainly due to termination of their services by the employers. The reason for higher unemployment rate among expatriates could be the higher job occupancy rate of foreign professionals in Dubai as compared to natives. It has been repeatedly highlighted that population of expats in some parts of Dubai outnumbers that of locals.

Another fact that came to light by the medium of this report is that more women were jobless than men. It is interesting to note that men in the local and women in foreign communities mostly lost jobs in Emirate. Those with higher qualification suffered the brunt of recession much more than semi-skilled or unskilled workers. It is also said that most of the people spent around 2 to 3 months looking for new jobs in Dubai. Also, majority of the laid off people were single and not married or without family.

Dubai has a unique labor structure which is why these figures are not very insightful though they definitely help in analyzing the improvement in employment situation. Even though it can not be said with certainty that Dubai economy can reach pre-crisis level by this year’s end, 2011 is expected to be a much better year. Jobs in Dubai are back, if not with a big bang, then definitely with a soft thunder.

Difference in Working Ways of Expats and Nationals in Bahrain

The expatriate working population is considered to be the backbone of various economies in the Middle East. There is a huge paucity of expertise and experience in the natives of these countries while foreign workforce specializes in it. This is why expat professionals are welcomed with open arms across the entire Middle Eastern region. But apart from this, it is also believed that expatriates work harder than the nationals and the chief reason attributed for the same is that they have the liberty to be much more sociable than the former.

There is a difference in the attitudes of expat and national workers in Bahrain though it does not imply that Bahrainis are underperformers and foreigners hardworking. Let’s take a quick look at their way of working:

-Bahrainis are usually ambitious and envision their careers to grow in line with the rapid development of their nation. They rely mainly on their being nationals to attain growth and not experience or diligence and this advantage is taken over by expatriates.

-Since natives have friends and relatives in their country, they get the liberty to socialize more than the migrants. On the other hand, foreign personnel spend lesser time on recreation and much more on work commitments.

-Manual labor is undertaken mostly by expats as natives of Bahrain shy away from such work. Though it is true that everyone wishes to hold the top most position, it is not practical. Like a department in the company needs both managers and executives, an organization requires a CEO as well as a security guard, a country too demands people to serve positions from that of an ambassador to a municipality worker at the same time. Expats need to participate in carrying out menial tasks too!
If all jobs are considered respectable, Bahrain can develop much faster than now!

GCC Promises Rapid Economic Growth

The primary growth driver for the economies of GCC countries is diversification and oil reserves. The swiftly growing trade and investment links of Gulf countries with other economies indicate positive sentiments in the market. The continued corporate expansion and economic liberalization of these countries- Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, the Sultanate of Oman, and the Republic of Yemen- are instrumental in their fast paced growth.

As per estimates, GCC economies are expected to grow by more than 3% this year and will cross 4% next year. It has been able to emerge from the global economic meltdown quite well in contrast to the Western economies. The lives of Gulf countries rest with fluctuation in oil prices as it can bring both the boost and the setback to their economies. But diversification has helped corporate sector in developing steadfastly ultimately fostering consumer wealth. Huge untapped opportunities await exploration in the Gulf region so as to stimulate creation of jobs, products and expertise.

The investors have started eyeing Gulf markets again reinforcing the resilience of its economy. The investment market is at its best across various segments and promises great returns in future. It is believed that over a million jobs are to be generated in every Gulf country by the year end across different industries. The private sectors are to be benefited hugely when development comes in full swing in the coming times.

Even as all Gulf countries are open to outsiders both in business and service areas as well as government and private sectors, Saudi Arabia seems to differ. It is a comparatively closed economy that aims at developing skills, education and capital of its natives. It would then involve them in its economic development while it diversifies and increase the opportunities.

Double Gain for Expatriates in Middle East

Middle East has always had a surreal identity that separates it from rest of the world. Thousands dream of working in this unexplored region as it offers copious amounts of money and a luxurious lifestyle. And with international companies recruiting from Middle East, expatriates have another opportune door open for them.

The desire to grab a job in Middle East is chiefly inspired from the whopping salaries paid there. Good money guarantees good lifestyle though one needs to follow the conservative ethics of the Arabic society. Moreover, with world’s best talent now found in Middle East, companies from countries like China and South Korea are now looking for manpower in places like UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and others.

Construction jobs in Middle East are the most popular owing to the rapid progress made in its realty sector. The huge developments led to recruitment of industry’s best talents to the region but the global economic meltdown changed many things. Professionals from Gulf and UAE are now preferred by employers in Hong Kong and Macau owing to the dearth in suitable manpower there. Since expatriates are willing to move on either due to economic uncertainties or completion of contract, the booming economies of Asia are taking advantage.

Therefore, those working in Middle East have a new door open to them which helps them move ahead after their work gets over. They can expect better movement outside the region as well and be an important part of the emerging markets. Expatriates now know ‘what and where next’ with plenty of job opportunities awaiting them outside the land of mysteries.
