New Laws to Protect Indian Expatriates

New measures are being taken to provide security to Indian expats employed in Gulf regions. Indian government has proposed to set up an emigration authority to oversee matters related to the movement of workers. It will then be compulsory for professionals moving outside the country to register themselves with this new authority. It is among the important moves by the government of India that aims at overseeing and assisting citizens leaving the country for work.

As part of government initiatives, creation of ‘migration attractiveness index’ for countries in the GCC and elsewhere is also being planned. This migration attractiveness index would guide migrant workers select the best destination by rating countries mainly in Gulf and Malaysia on a scale of 0 to 3 that would be updated biennially. As understood, countries scoring 3 would be the most attractive and those rated 0, the least. As per the sample index created by a consultancy firm for the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, UAE ranked highest- 2.2 out of 3, ahead of other Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia with 1.97.

The index is an attempt to identify the countries that migrant workers may or may not like to migrate to, by making a comparison based on a set of vocational, social, economic, professional and political factors. It will also guide them on the politico-legal framework and the socio-cultural environment of the countries. Economic factors include cost of living in the host country, savings and remittance potential, real economic growth rate, per capita income, income disparity, remittance costs and exchange rates, economic stability, etc.

It is believed that the proposed legislation will have a positive impact on UAE companies recruiting Indian workers. Moreover, it seems to be a commendable move on government’s part as workers will now have a clearer picture of what and what not to expect from the jobs overseas.

Job Growth Accelerating in Gulf and UAE

Gulf has always been a favorite career destination for expatriates from all around the world. Employment opportunities in Gulf and UAE have been bouncing back in full vigor this year. The scars that recession had left by making hundreds of people jobless last year are now being healed by job creation.

Gulf job market has abundance of career opportunities for well trained and highly skilled professionals across various sectors. Those who possess the required skill set, expertise and experience in their respective fields are welcomed with open arms in both Gulf and UAE. According to a survey, more than a quarter of companies in UAE are planning recruitments in the coming months.

Though the job growth will accelerate, experts believe it will reach an exceptional level as in 2007 and 2008. They are predicting normal employment growth i.e. single digit growth even in major cities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi and UAE. The employment situation before global financial crisis can not be restored in some sectors like real estate, etc. that had suffered due to declining sales, project delays and cancellations that prompted businesses to axe staff.

The nationals in the total workforce are expected to rise from around 8% in 2006 to almost 10% this year. Even the percentage of women in the Emirati workforce is anticipated to rise from 25 in 2006 to 32 in 2011. Employment growth is definitely going to pick though it may or may not match earlier figures of 2007.

A new hope has risen for those who had lost their high paying jobs in last 18 months. They can now look forward to getting new opportunities with better pay scales and lifestyle standards. The cost of living has also reduced as a consequence to recession and so, higher savings can be made.

Minimum salary slab set for the Kuwait private workers

Here comes the good news for the employees planning to go for work in Kuwait. Now, no more small pay packages could be given for your hard work in the Kuwait region of the gulf countries. The social affairs and the labour minister of Kuwait yesterday announced that no employer would be hired on a wage less than 60 Dinars. This has been a great step towards the improvisation of the economic conditions of a large number of people in Kuwait. This decision is the closure of the pending decision which was to be taken after the passing of the new labour laws in December.

As reported by an online news portal on gulf news, the minister said, that the new law will be implemented on all the new government projects, but, does not have any effect on the projects already implemented. The decision is a part of the drive, which the labour minister has started for the reformation of the labour market, to attract more workers towards the private market, by giving more benefits and higher salary packages to the employees in private sector. This is because of the reason, that a larger part of the economy growth is in the hands of the private sector in Kuwait, so to invite more job application for jobs in the private sector of Kuwait, this reformatory measure has been taken.

Also, currently the foreigners are paid very less in the private sector of the Kuwait market, which are mainly people who handle the private job sector of the gulf countries. So to balance the dependency and the participation and interest of the foreigners in the Kuwait jobs, this step seems to be a building stone in changing the mindset of the foreign workers including Indians towards the private jobs opportunities in Kuwait.

Women working in the Middle East

Women surely constitute an important part of the working force all over the country. The involvement of the women in the business and other professional projects is increasing day by day, with the employers becoming aware of the capabilities and the intelligence possessed by the women employees. Earlier also, foreign lands has always encouraged women employments and their association in the main projects of the organisation. They have proved to be a great asset for the most of the brands, all over the world, paving an easy path for the growth and development of their organisation.

Earlier places like Dubai, and other states in the Middle East, were considered backward in terms of women employment. They made their women restricted to the households, defining the handling of house work as their main jobs, but with the women proving their skills all over the world, the countries in the Middle East have also opened their arenas for the women workers. Today, the women in the Middle East countries, like Dubai, Saudi Arabia are proud owners of many renowned companies and agencies. Most of the women workforce in Dubai or other Arab countries can be seen employed in the teaching, advertising, marketing, public relative, creative writing and other service providing sectors of the country.

There are very strict punishments for the people, who try to misbehave or sexually harass the women employees, due to which women are highly safe in the countries and enjoy a very contented lifestyle in the Arab countries. There are women working in Middle East from foreign lands, who are very happy and earning and living the life of their choice, which certainly proves that women in the Arab countries have started enjoying their freedom and rights, which in turn leads to the encouragement of more women applying for jobs in the Middle East countries.
